I have to really wonder at that.  You'll probably find that many cameras
are made from standard parts (CMOS optical block, common interface ICs,
etc.).  If a manufacturer is just interested in selling cameras, they
don't have to do it through special hardware or drivers.

Web cameras *could* be just as generic as USB flash drives, USB hard
drives, and whatnot.  Most of them do not need special drivers.
Manufacturers could build the cameras to a consistent specification, and
then all OSs would just use a standard webcam driver, not needing
specific ones per manufacturer.

And being generic doesn't preclude one manufacturer from making a better
camera than their opposition.  They can have better optics, different
designs, include a decent microphone, etc.

Just why is it that having sound with a picture is considered not worth
bothering with?  It's not just cameras I refer to, but various
applications that handle web cam chatting make no provision for doing
sound at the same time.

I want my futuristic video phone, dammit, it's after the 2000s.
