Well, to be fair they have a limited amount of resources to be used fro support, so I don't begrudge them the "solution" you note (though it obviously doesn't help me right now).
The interesting thing is that this works fine on a Sun Fire x4100. And given that RHEL releases are derived from FC, one would think that they should provide similar base hardware support.
