I used to pay for expensive true hardware raid cards then I switched

There are advantages to having hardware raid with battery backed cache,
particularly when running databases. But for home use the flexibility
of software raid is nice.
What is the benefit of battery backed cache when on a UPS? I have never
understood the reasoning behind this.
I am debating getting a full RAID card or using software RAID for a new
storage box.
