Well, I don't pretend to understand, but next time I rebooted after posting that, yum update appeared to complete normally. <shrug> What I do feel sure of, though, is that its success was surely due to help received on this list and in this list, whether or not the reboot had anything to do with it. My heartfelt thanks! In fact, since we very rarely boot up the iBook any more, except to maintain Net contact while doing an upgrade or install, and as a loaner for house guests, it's all the more important that yum update work when it does get invoked.
