I think you have only 2 choices: either continue troubleshooting or backup your important data, note down your configurations (note: I did not say backup your configuration files -- see below), then wipe your disk clean and do a fresh install of FC5. The choice you make should be determined by 2 things: how much time you have, and how much hair you have left to pull out in frustration. My brutally honest (and possibly mistaken) opinion is to do the wipe and clean install. There are quite a few changes between FC3 and FC5, and depending on what you are running, whether your system is functioning as a server or as a desktop, it may not be worth the time and trouble to slog through what could potentially be a minefield of duplicate packages, deprecated configurations, etc. If, however, you wish to learn all you can about the internals of your operating system and you have lots of time to spare, then by all means continue troubleshooting. If you have existing configurations that you wish to preserve, then the picture gets complicated. Some people would argue that backing up the configuration files, then after the re-install, restoring them and overwriting the defaults is a good idea. I would caution that this assumes that there have been no major changes in the packages that would break your original configuration. If you're feeling lucky, then maybe you could try this method. This is why I used to insist on detailed documentation, not just a copy of the configuration files, whenever I was in charge of a project. Right now, you have several problems: X cannot start because something, possibly permissions, or your graphics card driver is not working properly. Your default run-level has also been dropped to 3 (text mode), which is sensible because you really need to fix your X problem first; in a previous thread you have 2 versions of python installed. I'd say that you have a seriously messed up system right there. If you are using your computer as a desktop, you probably have several more packages that may exhibit problems later, if they haven't already.
