FC5 doesn't start up right.

I am not able to start right into gnome or kde.  I think it is set to start in kde and it is failing.  I have to boot into linux using the argument linux 3, log in as root and then 'gdm' to get into X.  Why is this?  When I boot regular it stops after starting Hal Daemon.  I had fc3 and upgraded to fc5 and this has been the problem since the upgrade.  There seems to be a lot of problems with python, I am not sure if that is the problem but it is a problem.
