Out of interest, was it just for the ntfs stuff that you built a custom kernel? try booting with enforcing=0 on the end of your kernel line. for it to be more informative, you should probably edit the line to say something like this: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16.10 ro root=/whatever enforcing=0 ie remove any mention of rhgb/quiet.
