Out of interest, was it just for the ntfs stuff that you built a custom
kernel?
try booting with enforcing=0 on the end of your kernel line. for it to
be more informative, you should probably edit the line to say something
like this:
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.16.10 ro root=/whatever enforcing=0

ie remove any mention of rhgb/quiet. You should see a large number of
errors, but at least you can do stuff when the boot process has finished.

incidentally, for the ntfs stuff you can just as easily use the livna
repository and install kmod-ntfs
