I remember having the same issue with this box (my office machine), and I managed to get it going, but I can't remember what I did - aargh ;-) I seem to remember updating Python, but I tried that on the home box, and it didn't work. It may have something to do with having installed the beta version of Spambayes first, I thought I'd removed the Beta version completely and reinstalled the stable version - as far as I can tell, the install just places the python scripts in /usr/lib - I'm still looking into that. Maybe some lib gets installed that's not functioning correctly - I don't know, just guessing. I'll keep working on it.
