Actually -R disks work just fine, at least for me.

I see Nero in the subject line above.  Does this mean that you're trying to
use Nero under Windbloze to create the DVD?  What are you doing with the DVD
after it is burned?

The growisofs solution under linux as Paul shows above would be much
preferable to Nero.

You may be experiencing data underrun. Check that DMA is enabled for
your burner so that the burners data buffer does not run out of data
and close opened applications.

Manufacturers exaggerate the quality/capabilities of both media and
burners. To get consistent results you should set your burn speed to
one-half or less of the speed stamped on the media. For example: 16X
DVD-R set the burn speed to 8X; 8X DVD-R set the burn speed to 4X.
