Although have no idea yet, it does sound something to do with swap. Boot into rescue mode to get a prompt; find the device to use with fdisk -l (probably will be /dev/sda), then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=2 (although I typically zero out the first full cylinder at least).
