I take it /dev/sda1 is / ?

Is there any difference in the output of mount from cli depending on
if you provide your password to mount or not?

sda1 is *everything* not just the root directory.

I don't have an answer to your question. This occurs during automatic
startup and by the time it kicks in it's through the UI and the cli
isn't showing. If I'm rebooting I generally switch it to show me the
cli whilst it's going along but it's gone by the time this dialog shows
itself.

I'm worried, due to lack of knowledge, about trying to unmount and then
mount this, only, drive. Is it possible to do? I know how to stop the
system automatically starting KDE and going to a login prompt instead,
if that's required.

I meant the / filesystem .

No need to umount anything. When you reboot provide the password to the mount pop-up and then go to Konsole and run "sudo df -h". Reboot again and do the same thing without entering the password . Is the output of "sudo df -h" any different?
