I've been meaning to help implement support for AccountService... Unfortunately, haven't had a lot of free time to do so.

There's certainly been much complaining about it upstream for a number
of years (for example, https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/510,
https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/346,
https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/481) but it's actually a somewhat
difficult problem. There's no guarantee that you can even access the
user home directory until later in the login process.
So you end up with a per-machine default, or a per-user, per-machine
default. Neither works for me, so I still sadly run KDM. I honestly
wish it could just delegate reading and changing the default to a pair
of scripts which run in the right contexts, and then let me choose how
to handle that.
