Hey Rex, just a clarification... I did find the symbolic link... it isn't in /usr/share/backgrounds/ 
it is in /usr/share/backgrounds/images/

Does /usr/share/backgrounds/default.png symlink exist and is valid?

It's provided by desktop-backgrounds-compat, we've seen reports of that
symlink getting broken from time to time (no idea how that happens).
