Pretty sure it's not an intentional thing on the KDE side.

It may depend on your definition of "recently".

After Plasma 5.9.x was introduced, *some* theme elements did change in minor 
ways, but I'm pretty sure it alone cannot be responsible for what you 
describe.

Second item to consider: Qt 5.8 was recently introduced too.
