OK, I believe I figured out how to turn off Baloo - and I haven't had any zombies for a few days, so it appears to be working:
Under system settings, search, File Search: unclick - enable file search
Under system settings, search, Plasma Search: unclick - Desktop Search; unclick - Plasma Desktop Shell
Under system settings, search, File Search: unclick - enable file search
Under system settings, search, Plasma Search: unclick - Desktop Search; unclick - Plasma Desktop Shell
