I had an issue with an onboard AMD video processor that used to lock my
machine. Took me weeks to find out it was the video card at fault.
Since getting a nvidia video card, no lockups.
I would try to ssh into the machine to see if there is something you can
do. With my video issue, I could ssh into the machine and do a pretty
clean shutdown and reboot.
