Giving a follow up about this issue. My wife, running F23, told me that this bug is fixed for her. Following the workaround given at the kde bug report given in this thread I got: $ ll $HOME/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list $HOME/.config/ mimeapps.list -rw-rw-r--. 1 jamatos jamatos 1548 Apr 8 20:19 /home/jamatos/.config/ mimeapps.list -rw-rw-r--. 1 jamatos jamatos 33198 Feb 11 16:44 /home/jamatos/.local/share/ applications/mimeapps.list Merging the two files and creating a symbolic link did not fixed the problem. In this case I decided to remove all the options from the file and start with a fresh one and that fixed the problem.
