How about this. Forget about a browser for a moment.

Why does xdg-email bring up kmail when I've tried to set the default to
thunderbird? Why does setting the default have no effect?

how about provide some details?
does it affect other browsers too?
how did you set it?

thunderbird -> settings -> extended -> system-integration works here
