The whole lifetime of KDE/Plasma 4 was the transitional phase! But the problem is that the application developers are also dependent on the toolkit developers, and there, the GTK+ developers stubbornly refuse to natively support the Status Notifier Item (SNI) standard. You can use libappindicator, but it is not a drop-in replacement for the GTK+ systray classes, and the GTK+ developers don't recommend its use. (There may or may not also be other issues with it.) Other non-Qt toolkits also don't support SNI, usually because nobody bothered adding support for it.
