Thank you.

I did precisely that before getting your message but it is reassuring to
know that it was the right thing to do.

Even after this simplification I get this:

$ cd
$ ls -d .* | wc -l
248

Even if we remove the trivial . and .. from this list I get 248 hidden
files on my home. Even although the Spring is not yet here, and it will
not be in the next four months (in the northern hemisphere) I think that
some cleanings are in order. :-)
