altho current thru switch contacts is very low, thru the years of use,
contacts will become dirty. this does not make good conduction and can
cause problems as you are having.

"getting worse" could indicate that it is in the mouse and caused by
mechanical failure of the switch/switches. or cable.

'double click interval' time can be changed in your mouse configuration
settings.

then stop using problem mouse and try another mouse as already suggested.

in early days of mice, a 'micro switch' type switch was used. in time,
many mouse makers have moved to less expensive switches. many of which
do not have long actuation life.

a more common problem with 'wired' mice is where wire cable enters
housing and is clamped by some poor type of binding.

this can be checked by opening a program window with buttons and moving
pointer to button. then, holding offending button down on button and
wiggling and twisting cable. if button remains highlighted, cable may
be good. if it flashes, then you can presume it is cable.

years ago, i got tired of keeping an area cleared on desk to move mouse
around on [and other reasons] and bought a logitech thumb marble mouse.
from that day forward, 'mousing' has been nothing but pure pleasure.

long story short, 'bite the bullet', try another mouse.

The installation instructions stated to install Windows 2000 or better.
So I installed Linux.
