Thanks Rex, I'll keep that in mind. However I had a brainwave in the meantime. It turns out the ID3 tags on the new material were incorrect, so Amarok was showing the files in a different part of the forest. Amarok is declared innocent until further notice. But I still think it's too complex and baroque.
