Obviously the card is too new to be supported :-( I ran s-c-d as you suggested, set the monitor to generic lcd and the video card to Intel Graphics chipset - and it booted to a black screen. I interrupted the boot, got to a text login, substituted the backup xorg.conf, logged in, and tried again. This time I set the monitor as before, but set the video card to Vesa Compliant, maximum 1280x1024. This time it booted up ok - but it is back to 1280 x 768 which it says is maximum - and that gives me a display too big to fit on screen. The laptop is a 15.6" widescreen. I suspect that if I could get it to accept 1280x800 it would probably fit the screen.
