Network Management - probably pebcak needs sorting

One thing to mention:   nm-applet has a check box for "Enable networking".  
knetworkmanager doesn't have this, and in fact, if networkmanager ever gets 
into the state where it thinks "Enable networking" isn't, then 
knetworkmanager doesn't work (ie, it runs, but nothing happens and nothing 
appears in the system tray).  See also,
