Kontact/Akonadi is disastrous on 4.3.85

This is confusing.  What do you mean by 'the akonadi system settings panel'?

This sounds like a pre-akonadi version.  The latest version, if it has managed 
to migrate your addressbook to akonadi, looks very different from the old one.

It might be a good idea to compare versions.  My addressbook was converted in 
KDE SC 4.3.85.  I'm now on 4.3.90.  The resource that appeared originally was 
the one set up by the migration.  I know some migration bugs have been 
identified and corrected.
