Sound used to work, now it doesn't

It fixed itself when I rebooted with a new kernel. Go figure.

I'm replying personally because I noticed your .sig line says you're at
Heriot-Watt. I did my PhD at the Watt in 1978 in the EE Department (as
it was then). I also spent a sabbatical at Riccarton in 1995-96.
