Sound used to work, now it doesn't

Well that's reassuring.

I noticed the problem when a Flash page on the New York Times site
played video but no sound.

However, I have now updated my system, which includes installing a new
kernel and rebooting, and lo and behold sound is now back again, both on
the Flash page and in System Settings.

I stress that every user-visible setting is identical to what it was. I
don't know if the fix came from the new kernel, or just the reboot, or
restarting my KDE session, or the phase of the moon.
