I realized that xdvi was not a KDE application,
but I thought the problem might be something to do
with communication between desktops in KDE.

Basically, I prefer to use xdvi (and xpdf)
because I am more familiar with them.

But I confess that I also feel that in these as in several other cases
I'm not convinced that KDE can add anything to well-tried applications.

I admit that with this philosophy I probably should not have asked 
the question here ...
