I remember in older versions of Fedora, scanning via SANE with KDE was very easy, there was a dedicated SANE frontend, right now there seems to be none. If either of you maintainers have the available cycles, please take a look at Skanlite[1] it's the KDE4 SANE frontend listed on the SANE website.
