I believe you are correct, the Fedora site pointed me to this group but I was not looking for the right thing I guess.

It's good to learn, so if it's okay with you I'll stay tuned in and listen for a bit.  Maybe I'll be able to assist in this area as well.

Welcome. It sounds to me like you are more interested in helping out
with packaging and OS building than Infrastructure.

I'd suggest getting in touch with the maintainers of the yp/nis
packages you want to help improve and offer your services. You may want
to file bugs with patches attached.

If you're interested in infrastructure (we run the servers that build
Fedora), we can help you out further here. :)
