Few questions about font packaging: variable fonts & font coverage

Dear all,

I'm packaging a few Persian fonts, such as [1], and I encountered a few things which I'm not sure what to do:

1. For some font families, the font provides both normal font files for different font faces (e.g. regular, bold, ...), and also a variable version. I was wondering if they should be packaged into separate packages or not. I didn't see anything special about variable font packaging in the guidelines, but I've seen that some fonts provides separate packages for variable fonts (e.g. with -vf suffix in the name). Can I provide both in the same package or I should also create a -vf subpackage for variable version?

2. The font is mainly designed to support Persian/Arabic scripts, but each family is actually provided in two versions: a normal one (e.g. Vazirmatn family), and a Non-Latin one (e.g. Vazirmatn-NL family). The only difference is that the normal one is combined with Roboto font so that it also provides Latin glyphs. I should confess that I do not completely understand the implications of each of these, specially when fontconfig font selection rules are being applied. So, does packaging both of these families make sense? If I want to promote one of them to be used for Persian text by fontconfig, does it make a difference which one of them I promote? (This question is mainly about packaging NL type of families; I'll talk about the current state of Persian text rendering in Fedora and what can be done in a separate email).

Regards,

Hedayat
