If (given the other replies) the package is changed to edit the fonts'
names, it would likely be better to use software which acts on the SFNT
files directly, rather than using a font editor like fontforge, which
generates new fonts.

The DejaVu src uses the Font::TTF::Font Perl module to post-process
fontforge's output when generating the ttf files.  That module also
would work well for the edit proposed by bug 490830.
