You can ask the upstream if they have any backwards compatibility to version number policies as well. Sometimes when a project goes to 1.0 and beyond, they change their versioning policies so that major number releases are all compatible. Other times they stick with the minor number since they've gotten used to it throughout their 0.x development. -Toshio
