Is there anything I need to be aware of regarding special configuration
for X, before I respin the KDE/xfce/MATE images with the Pi specific
kernel/vc firmware?

    Clive, No it works as expected with systemd graphical target set. I
    dont like sddm,

    so I uninstalled and use gdm instead, due to it's more versatile
    auto-login properties.

    I did clock it a little 

    arm_freq=1000

    sdram_freq=500

    core_freq=500

    over_voltage=2

    with

    hdmi_force_hotplug=1

    disable_overscan=1

    hdmi_drive=1

    and 1920 x 1080 framebuffers
