If /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/rpmUtils/arch.py says "armv61" instead of "armv6l", this is probably what's causing it, and we should backport that patch. (In the meanwhile, you should be able to just sed that file (and arch.pyc and arch.pyo) to fix it.)
Oh that was it! Thanks a lot for the hint, yum is working normally. I was able to just delete the arch.pyo after fixing it in arch.pyc and it was recooked.
