If Gnome was releasing and maintaining it's own OS this would be fine however people may think they are donating to Fedora or a Fedora project or Fedora resources for that matter and get angry when they find out that's not the case ( probably when they start asking in the community where their donation went ) along with the opposite upstream side to this scenario so this probably is the only option due to brand collision between the desktop environment and the distribution and arguably upstream project as well.
Then there are potential legal/security concerns that the project might be ( financially ) liable to ( leaked credit card information etc ).
