You mention that opinions are rooted in the world of 5 years ago.
What do you think has changed in the linux world since then, and how
does it affect Fedora development?
I am under the impression that this question was more about the "dark
age" where we really screwed up our communication and priorities in
our relationship with the community with RHLP and Fedora at the
beginning. Maybe the timeframe of "5 years" is off, but this is a key
misunderstanding out in the community that continues to haunt us no
matter what progress we have made since these initial missteps.
My thought is, the response sounds too much like generalized fluff
when we should be attacking the question directly of how we've learned
from our mistakes in launching a community project, what we've managed
to build, and how we continue to improve?
I might be completely off base, I dunno.
I'm with you, Warren. We still pay a very high price for the "RHEL / FC
forking miscommunication". This still impacts on community perceptions
as we could recently observe with the "end of Fedora Foundation".
If transparency is one of our core values, let's use it in our favor.
I'd say "...We DID some mistakes specially when communicating the end of
RHL, but we've learnt a lot from our mistakes. We now have committees,
communicators, finance specialists and other professionals working for
Fedora Project and its sub-projects. These people, allied with community
and Red Hat engineers, help us to better manage the projects on a
professional fashion..."
On a related note, last week I talked to a journalist from the 2nd
biggest daily newspaper in Brazil, who was very interested in the fact
that I (a non-tech guy) was working for Fedora Project. It might be
worth to promote this and get even more contributors to different
projects i.e. docs, trans, events, etc
