Perhaps the first question to ask is, "How did you get the files to your
hard drive?"  Did you check the media if you are using a cdr that you
created?  If you have an ISO image file already in place, then you could
just mount the file and use the iso without first burning the iso to cdr
media.

mount -t iso9660 myfc5.iso /mnt -o loop

However, you still need to perform a sha1sum on the cd to make sure it
matches what was posted.  There is a file that holds all of these for
the ISO files.  Use
sha1sum -c sha1sum.txt

These techniques help protect you from media or file corruption
problems.  These issues could be causing your cpio errors.
