Do you have autofs running on /mnt?

I have never really dealt much with autofs, but i figured 'service autofs status' would let me know ... this is what it gives me:
Configured Mount Points:
------------------------

Active Mount Points:
--------------------

I ran this on my regular workstation (that has the cdrom and floppy dirs) and i got the same result. Should I be running a different command to test autofs?

p.s. - the problem seems to be intermittent - I just reinstalled again on a vmware machine and the directories are there!! That makes my test about 5:1 in favour of the directories not being created - bizarro :/
