Everything is ext3 -- could that be the problem?

By the way, I  compiled kernel 2.6.4 to modernize my machine
while waiting to figure out how to get FC1 going, but it would not boot, possibly
also related to ext3:
...
mount:  error 19 mounting ext3
...
Kernel Panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to the kernel

So I seem to be hosed no matter what I try-- what I'm really trying to accomplish is to
get everything upgraded so that I can get AMD cpu powersave modes working.
