Richard, Thanks, I remember seeing the $LANG change now that you mention it. buildinstall completes successfully but I still have the "requested keymap us is not valid, asking" message on Alt-F3. Alt-F1 shows the same "failed to read keymap information: illegal byte sequence". If I loopback mount the initrd.img from my bootdisk, I see a keymap.gz. When I gunzip it, it's binary garbage with no strings. Any ideas how I tell which keymaps are installed on my bootdisk?
