I haven't been following this thread too closely so forgive me if this has been suggested. Linux has a program called Audio Recorder. Perhaps with a hypen in your repo. (audio-recorder) 

Most of its features DON'T work for me but what does work is the basic record what you hear function. 

I would provide a link but every one I found is cluttered with ads. Better just to download it and read the manual.

Thank you for responding to my query. Not because I want to monitor.
Just want to hit the record button while listening to something
worthwhile for me. PulseAudio is perfect for me, but in one of my
laptops it doesn't work. So my illustrious Mailing List members in
debian-users list suggested that I had better used alsa. I said why
not?! So I began to look for options to learn alsa and its ways.
But what would be those packages for my Debian system? Do they vary
much from those in Debian?
Thank you once more in anticipation.
BTW, I have written to the Forum Admin to have my other accidental
post deleted. Could  you please help in this regard too?
