Hello! I'm using a GIGABYTE B450M DS3H V2 motherboard. The motherboard seems to have a Realtek ALC887-VD audio chipset. In the "aplay -L" output I find the following: [...] surround51:CARD=Generic,DEV=0 HD-Audio Generic, ALC887-VD Analog 5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround71:CARD=Generic,DEV=0 HD-Audio Generic, ALC887-VD Analog 7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers [...] Currently I'm enabling the "surround51" mode with: /usr/bin/amixer sset "Channel Mode" 6ch After that I mapped the channels, to I have three audio output in stereo. This works fine. According the the motherboard's handbook, the soundchip is capable to support an 8 channel mode using the "Front Panel Line Out" as a "Side Speaker Out". Setting the "Channel Mode" to "8ch" does not work. In the "ch6" mode the "Front Panel Line Out" has the same output as the (surround) "Front" lineout at the rear. My questions are: 1) How can I enable the ch8 mode? 2) Do ALSA need special support by the hardware drivers? (i.e. do the linux sound card driver have to support it?) 3) If it does not work, why? I hope someone can share some insights...
