You are right, I was using headphones that had a microphone and the jacks on the card do not handle the Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve (TRRS) connector.

The channels are entirely separated in the hardware.

This is likely to be a problem with the connector (not plugged in all the
way?) or with the headphones.
