PCM control in alsamixer not working when using asound.conf (dmix)

Hi,

I am using Debian with a "HDA Intel PCH" sound card (on-board).

I want to set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz in dmix in order to prevent upsampling.

Without any /etc/asound.conf file I can use the PCM control to change the volume (alsamixer).

This is also working:

# /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.!card PCH
defaults.pcm.!device 0

This is not working anymore (PCM control does not change the volume):

# /etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default “hw:PCH,0

So I guess this is overwriting the default settings. Can I see the default settings somewhere?

I can override the PCM control with the softvol plugin, but I am wondering if the default PCM control is also a softvol control or if I override a hardware control with a software control?

Is the Master control a hardware control?

regards
Tobi
