aplay underrun length

Hi,

I'm using aplay to play 70-seconds long WAV files for an auditory experiment. I'm keeping a log of stderr and I noticed that I often get underruns, for example:

underrun!!! (at least 121.945 ms long)

a single underrun lasting about 122-ms would be negligible for my experiment, while an underrun lasting say 5-10 seconds could be problematic.

When aplay says the underrun is 'at least' x seconds, what does this mean? How large could the margin of error be in the estimate of the underrun duration?

Usually there is a single underrun message (when an underrun occurs) in my stderr log. Occasionally there are two underrun messages. I assume this means that all underruns occuring during the playback of a single file will be reported separately?

Thank you for your help!

Sam
