Did you tried simply something like (from my /etc/asound.conf) :

pcm.!default {
     type plug
     slave.pcm "dmix"
}
ctl.!default {
     type hw
     card 0
}

Also before change asound.conf, you can test dmix with command $aplay 
file.wav -Dplug:dmix
