Broken pipe using the snd_pcm_avail command when outputting audio

Hello,
We're having an issue playing audio using the alsa library.  We're able to get a couple of seconds of audio output (we're receiving an audio stream and playing it through a speaker) however it always fails with a broken pipe.  The snd_pcm_avail command fails for us and once it does we are no longer able to output any sound.  We're a little stumped as to why the pipe is breaking - we recently updated our linux kernel to 3.14 from 2.6.35.13 (and updated our libraries as well) and our code that used to succeed is now failing.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Todd
