Understood, my mistake:

$ arecord -Dhw:1 -c2 -fS16_LE -r44100 ~/test.wav
Recording WAVE '/home/cinzia/test.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian,
Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
arecord: set_params:1233: Sample format non available
Available formats:
- S32_LE

so same problem as aplay.

plughw goes (apparently) into recording but create a file with 0 lenght.
setting the format to 32 bits:
~$ arecord -Dhw:1,0 -c2 -fS32_LE -r44100 ~/test.wav
Recording WAVE '/home/cinzia/test.wav' : Signed 32 bit Little Endian,
Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
arecord: pcm_read:2031: read error: Input/output error

spits out the error after around 4 seconds.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Valerio
