Buyers guide for new card with good alsa support?

I'm trying to find a new soundcard but I'm having problems finding the
information I need. I recently got a new system and I can't use my old
sound blaster live value anymore because there is no PCI slots on the
new mobo. There is an integrated sound blaster Z / Recon3D / ca0132 chip
on the mobo but the kernel support is so bad I can't use it.

I need a card with good alsa support. I don't want any kernel oops,
failure to suspend, need to power cycle the machine, playing around with
hda-analyzer or any of the other problems I have with the ca0132. I need
line-in and want the line-in to be hard wired to the outputs so I don't
have to use alsaloop. I also need hardware volume support on the line-in
and the outputs because alsa's softvol is buggy and horrible. I also
want sound quality as good as or better than my old sound blaster live.
I use Sennheiser HD 650 headphones. I also don't want to pay more than $200.

Optional requirements are optical digital in. It would be nice if that
could also be wired to the outputs directly but I guess that's not how
digital in works. External soundcards would also be nice so I could move
the card easily.

Using a popular price comparison site with the parameters above I get 8
internal cards and 4 external. Most of the internal cards are
soundblaster Z based and can't be used. What I'm left with is a Sound
Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI Express and a TerraTec Aureon 7.1 PCIe. Do
they work? The alsa wiki says that the X-Fi Xtreme is not supported but
various other sites say it is.

The external soundcards are a Sound Blaster X-Fi HD and some cheap junk
for laptops. The X-Fi HD does not appear to have hardware volume so I
can't use it.

If I scrap the optical digital in requirement are there any other cards?
